What is pre and post-operative physiotherapy?
Surgery goes better when the body is prepared for it and rehabilitated properly after it. Pre-operative physiotherapy (often called prehab) builds strength and range of motion before your procedure, so you go into the operating room in the best shape possible. Post-operative physiotherapy guides the recovery that follows: protecting the repair while movement and strength come back in the right order.
Before surgery (prehab)
A stronger joint before surgery usually means an easier recovery after it. Prehab sessions focus on:
- Building strength and range of motion around the joint being operated on
- Learning the exercises you’ll need in the early post-op weeks, while you can still practice them comfortably
- Setting a baseline so progress after surgery can be measured against where you started
After surgery
Rehabilitation starts from your surgeon’s protocol and the timelines they specify. We guide the progressive loading, restore range of motion, and reintroduce daily activities and sport-specific tasks stage by stage, so you always know what is safe now and what comes next.

Frequently asked
- When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
- It depends on the procedure and your surgeon's protocol. Many protocols start within the first week or two. Bring your surgeon's instructions to the first visit and we plan around them.
- Do I need a doctor’s referral?
- No. In Quebec, you can book physiotherapy, kinesiology, or massage therapy directly, without a referral. Some insurance plans may require a referral to reimburse you. Check with your insurer.
- What languages do you offer care in?
- Our team treats in French, English, Arabic, and Cantonese.
